A fresh controversy has erupted within the political and media circles following allegations by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Prince Diran Odeyemi, that gospel musician and media entrepreneur, Yinka Ayefele, ordered the abrupt removal of a live political programme, Agbami Oselu, from Fresh FM while it was still on air.

Odeyemi, in a strongly worded statement circulated on social media, alleged that the programme was interrupted midway shortly after he made comments considered critical of the administration of President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to him, the programme’s presenter was reportedly informed during the live broadcast that management had directed that the discussion be terminated immediately.

Odeyemi described the development as an attack on press freedom and free expression, insisting that radio stations have a responsibility to accommodate divergent political opinions rather than suppress them.

He further claimed that the action suggested an attempt to shield the Federal Government and the ruling APC from criticism, arguing that public discourse should remain open in a democratic society regardless of whose interests are affected.

Ayefele, however, dismissed the allegation, insisting that he neither monitored the programme nor gave any directive to stop it.

Responding to the accusation, the Fresh FM founder maintained that editorial decisions are handled by professionals within the station and not by him personally.

He accused Odeyemi of dragging his name into an issue in which he had no involvement and urged him to refrain from making what he described as unfounded claims capable of damaging his reputation. (youtube.com⁠)

Ayefele stressed that Fresh FM operates with established editorial procedures and denied interfering with the station’s day-to-day programming.

The exchange has since sparked intense reactions on social media, with supporters of both men taking opposing positions over whether the incident amounted to censorship or was merely an internal programming decision.

Political observers say the controversy has once again brought to the fore longstanding concerns over editorial independence, media ownership and the delicate balance between business interests and freedom of expression, especially as political activities ahead of future elections continue to gather momentum.

Neither the management of Fresh FM nor the presenter of Agbami Oselu had issued a detailed public explanation on the circumstances surrounding the programme’s interruption as of the time of filing this report.

Both Odeyemi and Ayefele, however, remain firm in their positions, leaving the incident to fuel fresh debate over the role of privately owned media organisations in Nigeria’s democratic space.
