President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has submitted a list of 32 new ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation, following an initial submission of three names last week.
This was contained in a press statement signed by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on Saturday.
According to the statement, the new list was sent in two separate letters to Senate President Godswill Akpabio by President Tinubu, requesting prompt confirmation for 15 career ambassadors and 17 non-career ambassadors."
The lists include four women among the career nominees and six among the non-career nominees.
Notable non-career nominees include former presidential aide Reno Omokri, former INEC chairman Mahmud Yakubu, former Ekiti First Lady Erelu Angela Adebayo, and former Enugu Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. Other prominent figures are former Katsina House of Assembly speaker Tasiu Musa Maigari, former Plateau Commissioner Yakubu N. Gambo, former Senator Professor Nora Ladi Daduut, former Lagos Deputy Governor Otunba Femi Pedro, former Aviation Minister Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Oyo First Lady Fatima Florence Ajimobi. Also nominated are former Abia Governor Victor Okezie Ikpeazu, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, and former Ambassador to the Holy See, Paul Oga Adikwu.
Career ambassador nominees include Enebechi Monica Okwuchukwu (Abia), Yakubu Nyaku Danladi (Taraba), Miamuna Ibrahim Besto (Adamawa), and Musa Musa Abubakar (Kebbi), among others.
These nominees are expected to be assigned to countries with strategic bilateral relations, such as China, India, and Canada, as well as Permanent Missions like the United Nations. Their specific diplomatic postings will be determined after Senate confirmation.
The three nominees sent last week—Ambassador Ayodele Oke, Ambassador Amin Mohammed Dalhatu, and Retired Colonel Lateef Kayode Are—are under consideration for postings to the UK, USA, or France.
President Tinubu indicated that more ambassadorial nominations would be announced in the near future.
