Mrs. Onabanjo, who celebrated her centenary birthday just months ago (she turned 100 on October 26, 2025), passed away on Monday, January 11, 2026.
One of her children, Olubukunola Onabanjo, broke the news on her Facebook page, writing, "The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State, announces with deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to Almighty God, the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925-2026), who was called to glory on Monday, 11th January.
"We thank God for her long and fulfilled life, and for the enduring legacy of love, strength, and faith she leaves behind.
"May her soul rest in perfect peace."
Mrs. Onabanjo was a pillar of strength and support to her late husband before, during, and after his tenure as governor from 1979 to 1983, and remained a revered figure in the state long after.
Known for her quiet dignity, philanthropic endeavors, and commitment to community development, she touched many lives through various initiatives.
Her legacy of grace and service will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Among those extolling her virtues, Adebesin Abiodun Abacha commented on Olubukunola's post: "I extend my profound and heartfelt condolences to the family of the first Executive Governor of Ogun State on the peaceful passing of your beloved wife and mother.
"She lived a life of dignity, strength, and lasting impact, leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and service that will be remembered for generations.
