The recent celebration of Oyo State's 50th anniversary has ignited a significant controversy following the omission of the late Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu from the list of honorees.
A section of the finale program, which aimed to recognize individuals, living or deceased, who contributed to the state's development, conspicuously left out the prominent political figure, leading to widespread debate across social media platforms.
Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, who passed away in 2008, was a towering presence in Oyo State's political landscape.
Known as the "Strongman of Ibadan Politics," his influence on grassroots mobilization and electoral outcomes was undeniable.
Many believed his inclusion in the golden jubilee celebration was a foregone conclusion, given his extensive political network and lasting impact on the state's trajectory.
The omission has however prompted questions regarding the criteria for selection and the historical memory of Oyo State.
Political analysts and social media users have expressed diverse opinions.
Some argue that Adedibu's historical significance cannot be understated, regardless of personal views, and that his exclusion is an attempt to rewrite history.
A Facebook user, Adigun Ibadan, expressed his disappointment, questioning Governor Seyi Makinde's rationale: "It is so disgusting, disheartening, unfortunate and demoralize for his Excellency Gov. Seyi Makinde not to remember the late political icon of Ibadanland, the Oloosa Molete himself, Alhaji Lamidi ArÃyÃbà Adedibu during Oyo @50 celebration."
Conversely, Olaniyan T. Alphonso, another commenter, suggested that the omission might be justified.
While initially surprised, he reflected on the grounds for honoring Adedibu: "What did Baba Adedibu’s politics stand for, and what legacy did he leave behind? ... I believe those who organized the awards put a lot of thought into it.
If not, what exactly would Baba have been honored for?" Alphonso clarified that his stance was not driven by sentiment, despite his personal closeness to Adedibu.
King Ade Aderotoye, however, disagreed with Alphonso, drawing parallels between Adedibu and other prominent political figures like President Bola Tinubu and Senator Bukoka Saraki, highlighting their similar political ideologies.
Aderotoye emphasized Adedibu's role as a "Baba egbe" (political mentor) to several governors and asserted that his place in history cannot be erased.
He concluded, "I believe he has a legacy that should at least be recognized by the present government, moreover they were in the same political party."
