Ibadan Golf Club (IGC), located in the serene Onireke GRA, Ibadan, was a hive of activity last week, buzzing with excitement and camaraderie.
The prestigious club hosted a vibrant, week-long celebration to honor its outgoing Captain, Mr. Seyi Alaba, a renowned security expert and CEO of PG Security, as he concluded his impactful second term.
The festivities commenced on Monday, February 9th, with a spirited Caddies Competition, followed by the Veterans, Super Veterans & Staff event on Wednesday, February 11th. Thursday, February 12th, saw a Special Kitty dedicated to celebrating Past Captains, reflecting on their contributions to the club's rich history.
The celebratory atmosphere reached its zenith on Friday, February 13th, with an exclusive welcome cocktail for invited professional golfers. The evening kicked off with an engaging karaoke segment, gradually evolving into a full-blown dance party, fueled by the electrifying performances of Wole Ojo's band and the dynamic beats of the DJ on the wheels of steel. Attendees were treated to a lavish spread of both local and continental delicacies, perfectly complemented by a selection of choice drinks.
Saturday, February 14th, marked the highly anticipated Captain’s Day golf tournament and closing ceremony.
Top golfers from within the club, across the nation, and beyond, converged to compete fiercely in the tournament aptly tagged 'Alabama Bows Out'.
Later that day, a grand reception, affectionately named 'Ololo Night with Valentine Sia,' saw the presentation of prizes to the tournament winners.
The evening also provided an opportunity to honor several esteemed veterans of the club for their enduring dedication.
Mr. Sadiq Ajibola, a distinguished member of IGC, emerged as the overall winner, showcasing exceptional skill with a total score of 82 Gross and 69 Net.
He masterfully outplayed his close rival, Daniel Ojuma, who secured second place with 85 Gross and 69 Net.
Other notable winners included Mr. Ade Sunmonu, who clinched the Men’s Gross prize, and Sade Ajala, who impressively secured the Ladies’ Net title with a score of 86 Gross and 72 Net, among other deserving champions across various categories.
Beyond the fanfare of the sign-out ceremony, the entire event truly embodied its slogan: 'a swing of gratitude, driving excellence.'
As clearly evidenced in his scorecard and widely attested to in numerous heartfelt tributes, Mr. Alaba is poised to leave an indelible mark as he officially steps down as IGC Captain on April 1st, 2026.
It was therefore no surprise when Captain Alaba, in his poignant remarks, eloquently highlighted the key achievements of his executive team.
Expressing profound gratitude to the club members for the invaluable opportunity to serve, "Cappy Ololo," as Alaba is popularly called, emphasized that the unwavering support, encouragement, and camaraderie transformed his tenure into an unforgettable journey.
He shared: “As Captain of Ibadan Golf Club, my executive team and I focused relentlessly on driving progress and excellence.
"We prioritized enhancing the club’s public image, spearheading rebranding efforts, and fostering quality membership growth and development.
“Our initiatives included significant upgrades to course maintenance, equipment, and facilities, alongside improvements to the clubhouse and overall amenities.
"We also successfully boosted member participation and engagement across all activities.
“As I bow out as Captain on April 1, 2026, I am confident that I leave behind a legacy of excellence that will continue to inspire future generations of golfers. I have given my best, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together.
“To my Excos, both past and present, I extend my deepest gratitude for your tireless efforts and unwavering commitment. And to my supporters and fellow Captains from other clubs, I deeply appreciate your trust and invaluable collaboration throughout my tenure."
In his own remarks, Barr. Bayo Titilola-Sodo, Second Vice Captain of Ibadan Golf Club and Chairman of the Organising Committee for Captain's Day 2026, described Alaba as a visionary leader with remarkable achievements.
“Mr Alaba is a Captain who put in everything and more to improve our course from Hole 1 to 18 and even our Hole 19. He worked with utmost zeal to achieve his vision for the club, displaying the attributes of a great leader — focused, vibrant, resilient, innovative, decisive, trustworthy, strategic, empathetic, and above all, accountable," Sodo noted.
