Ace broadcaster Edmund Obilo has finally ended his nine-year association with Ibadan-based Splash FM, announcing his departure from the station after several years of joining and leaving the organisation.
Obilo, who became popular for anchoring programmes including Voices and Bull’s Eye, disclosed that he would be leaving the station on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, to pursue the next phase of his career.
His latest departure comes barely three months after he returned to the station following an earlier resignation that had attracted considerable attention in the city.
Explaining the reason for his return at the time, Obilo said he had resumed work primarily to fulfil the three-month notice period required before his eventual exit.
“This time around, this is the final, final end of my sojourn with Splash FM as a staff,” he said in an interview with online medium PMParrot.
Asked why he had announced his departure only about three months after returning to the station, the broadcaster explained that his return was connected to his contractual obligation.
“That time, I returned only to fulfil the three-month-notice obligation. The three months are gone and it is time for me to move on,” he stated.
Obilo also said details of his next career move would be made public in due course, without revealing where he intended to work next.
His exit reportedly followed a period of disagreement with the management of the radio station. Reports at the time linked the disagreement to issues involving the station’s management, headed by Bisi Akande, daughter of Splash FM proprietor, Chief Adebayo Akande.
Obilo, however, did not publicly dwell on the reported disagreement in announcing his departure, choosing instead to focus on the next chapter of his professional journey.
His relationship with Splash FM had previously survived an earlier resignation, after notable personalities, including then Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, reportedly intervened to facilitate his return to the station.
In a message posted on the Edmund Obilo Voices Facebook fan page, the broadcaster informed his followers of his decision to leave.
“Hello friends, will be bowing out of Splash FM on Wednesday, 28 Sept., 2016, after more than nine years of journalism experience with the station. Will miss my beloved Splash FM. Thanks for the support,” he wrote.
Obilo’s departure marked the end of an eventful period at one of Ibadan’s prominent radio stations, where his distinctive broadcasting style and popular programmes had earned him a strong following among listeners.
