Check Out Emir of Kano Sanusi’s N132m Rolls-Royce: Why People Won’t Stop Talking About It

One story that generated considerable buzz on social media during the 2016 Eid-el-Kabir celebration was the reported acquisition of a 2016 Rolls-Royce Phantom by the then Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The luxury automobile, according to reports circulating at the time, was estimated to have cost about $417,887, which was put at approximately ₦132 million based on the prevailing exchange rate.

Sanusi reportedly shared a photograph of the all-white Rolls-Royce on his Instagram account on Monday, drawing considerable attention from followers and other social media users.

The reported purchase also became a talking point because it was seen as another addition to the monarch’s collection of luxury automobiles.

Why the Car Sparked Controversy
While there was no suggestion that the Emir had broken any law by purchasing a vehicle of his choice, the reported acquisition triggered a debate over the timing of such an expensive purchase.

Some social media users argued that the issue was less about whether Sanusi could afford a luxury car and more about the prevailing economic circumstances in Nigeria at the time.

Nigeria was then grappling with a severe economic downturn, while thousands of displaced Nigerians were living in Internally Displaced Persons, IDP, camps across the country. Reports of hunger and hardship among vulnerable families, including children, had also generated widespread concern.
Against that backdrop, critics questioned whether such a huge sum could have been deployed towards humanitarian and charitable initiatives.

Supporters Defend the Emir
Not everyone shared the criticism. Some of Sanusi’s supporters maintained that his personal choice of automobile should not automatically be interpreted as a failure to contribute to society.

They argued that owning an expensive vehicle and supporting charitable causes were not mutually exclusive, pointing to the monarch’s public interventions on social and economic issues.

For critics, however, the controversy remained largely symbolic. They believed that, given Sanusi’s prominent position as a traditional ruler and public figure, the reported purchase sent the wrong message at a time when many Nigerians were struggling with the effects of the economic recession.

Beyond the Rolls-Royce itself, the debate highlighted a broader conversation about wealth, public responsibility and the expectations placed on prominent Nigerians during periods of economic hardship.

For several days, the reported ₦132 million Rolls-Royce remained one of the most talked-about luxury purchases involving a Nigerian public figure on social media.
