Alaafin’s Daughter, Folasade Adeyemi Honoured With NIGMA Award

Princess Folasade Adeyemi, daughter of the late Alaafin of Oyo, has been honoured for her contributions to the promotion of arts, culture and tourism in Nigeria and beyond.

Folasade was among the prominent Nigerians recognised at the 2016 edition of the Nigerian Meritorious Award (NIGMA), held on Sunday, October 9, at the Bespoke Event Centre in Lekki, Lagos.

Organisers of the award said NIGMA was established to recognise Nigerians at home and in the diaspora whose work and achievements contribute meaningfully to human development and the progress of society.

According to them, the award is also designed to encourage deserving Nigerians by celebrating their contributions and highlighting the impact of their work at the local, national and international levels.

Princess Folasade, who was the Chief Executive Officer of Arewa House of Culture and Cultural Consultant to the Alaafin of Oyo at the time, had carved a niche for herself through her efforts to promote Nigerian arts and cultural heritage.

Her activities had taken her beyond Nigeria, with cultural initiatives and engagements in countries including the Republic of Benin, the United States, Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil.

Through her work, she had continued to use her networks and international connections to draw attention to Yoruba traditions and culture while promoting the importance of preserving Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

At the time of the award, Folasade had just returned to Nigeria from South Africa, where she was hosted by the South Africa chapter of Egbe Omo Yoruba in Diaspora.

Her recognition at the NIGMA awards therefore came as another acknowledgement of her growing influence in the promotion of arts, culture and tourism.
