Iwo-Osogbo Road: Oluwo Mobilises Support for Zero-Pothole Project

The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Adewale Akanbi, Telu I, has called on residents, community groups and stakeholders in Iwoland to support an initiative aimed at tackling the potholes along the Iwo-Osogbo road.

Oba Akanbi said the initiative was designed to complement the efforts of the Osun State Government in improving road infrastructure and easing movement along the important route.

According to the monarch, the poor condition of the road had persisted for years and negatively affected economic activities in Iwo and other communities along the corridor.

He stressed that the road, which serves as an important gateway to Osun State capital, Osogbo, needed urgent attention because of its economic importance to the people.

“The road that has been abandoned for years has crippled the economic activities of Iwoland and other towns along the axis. The road which serves as the gateway to the Osun State capital must be put into good shape. It must be in good condition,” the monarch said.

Oba Akanbi urged residents to embrace community participation in addressing challenges affecting their environment, noting that government could not shoulder every responsibility alone.

“We have to understand that self-help is the best help. And even community works and engagement preceded the advent of government,” he said.

According to him, citizens and community organisations have an important role to play by complementing government efforts, particularly in areas where immediate intervention is required.

The Oluwo consequently appealed to various groups and associations in Iwoland, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Isokan Musulumi of Iwoland, Tawun, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Tippers Association, Okada Riders Association, Bricklayers Association and Quarry Association, to support the initiative.

He announced that the pothole-filling exercise was scheduled to commence at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2016, along the Iwo-Osogbo road.

Oba Akanbi also called on sons and daughters of Iwoland to contribute their time, materials and other resources towards the success of the project.

“The importance of this road to the economy of Iwo and the entire state of Osun cannot be overemphasised. Let’s come together and get this project done. Let’s support this project with necessary materials and in person,” he appealed.

He added that individuals and organisations willing to support the initiative could visit the palace and meet with him directly to discuss ways of contributing to the project.
