Oyo Declares Wednesday Work-Free For Teachers

The Oyo State Government has declared Wednesday, October 5, 2016, a work-free day for teachers across the state to enable them to commemorate this year’s World Teachers’ Day.

Government also congratulated teachers on the occasion, acknowledging their contributions to education and national development.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, announced the decision in a statement issued to mark the annual celebration.

Olowofela described teachers as an important pillar of national development, noting that their responsibility extends beyond classroom instruction to shaping the character and future of younger generations.

“Teachers are an integral part of national development as they passionately mould the lives of future leaders,” he said.

He urged teachers not to relent in their efforts to improve the state’s education system and called for continued cooperation with the government in implementing its Education Reform Initiative.

According to him, such collaboration had become particularly important in view of the economic challenges confronting the country at the time.

Olowofela explained that World Teachers’ Day, celebrated annually on October 5, was established to draw global attention to the teaching profession and the welfare of teachers.

He said the day commemorates the adoption of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers on October 5, 1966, a landmark document that set out important standards concerning teachers’ rights, responsibilities and professional status.

“The day is particularly set aside to bring global attention to the world’s most important profession and the welfare of its practitioners,” the commissioner explained.

The state government therefore urged teachers to use the celebration to reflect on their critical role in building a better society while assuring them of its continued commitment to improving the education sector.
