PDP Crisis: How Babangida, Abdulsalami & Co Brokered Peace — Jonah Jang

The Senator representing Plateau North Senatorial District and former Governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, has disclosed how former military Heads of State, General Ibrahim Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, among others, intervened in the crisis that rocked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Jang said the intervention, which helped reconcile the factions led by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and Senator Ahmed Makarfi, had strengthened the party and, in his view, positioned it for victory in the 2019 general elections.

Speaking to PDP supporters in Jos on efforts to reconcile the party’s aggrieved factions, Jang expressed concern over the defection of several prominent party members to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said the intervention of the former military leaders demonstrated what he described as growing concerns among Nigerians over the direction of the APC-led administration.

According to Jang, the reconciliation process would be consolidated through the establishment of a committee tasked with implementing the agreement reached by the party’s stakeholders.

“Important stakeholders of the party intervened by reconciling the two factional leaders of the party. They include General Ibrahim Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, among others.

“They have been involved in the reconciliation of our two factional leaders, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

“The two leaders have now agreed for a committee to be formed to conduct a convention. With that understanding, all cases in court would be withdrawn, and there will be no room for members to drag the party to court on issues that can be resolved internally,” Jang said.

Jang, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, urged the party to develop strategies capable of responding to what he described as undemocratic practices by the APC ahead of the 2019 elections.

He cautioned PDP members against relying solely on the party’s popularity, stressing that electoral success would also depend on its ability to prepare for the political environment and conduct of elections.

“We take things for granted; we think PDP is so popular that organs saddled with the conduct of elections will go by our gentility.

“When you have an opponent who is not democratic, you should also find a way to counter his undemocratic behaviours,” he said.
