The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has declared two of its officials wanted over their alleged involvement in the clearance of a container containing 661 pump-action rifles seized in Lagos.
The two officials are Abdullahi I. (444A3 ASC) and Odiba Haruna Inah (133386 ACIC). Other individuals allegedly connected to the shipment have reportedly been arrested.
Their declaration was contained in a warrant signed by the Deputy Comptroller-General, Dan Ugo, of the Enforcement, Investigation and Inspection section of the Nigerian Customs Service.
The development followed the seizure of a 40-foot container by the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A of the NCS, along the Mile 2 axis of the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in Lagos, on January 22, 2017.
According to the report, Customs officers intercepted a Mack truck with registration number BDG 265 XG conveying the container, numbered PONU/825914/3.
Upon examination, the container, which reportedly originated from China, was found to contain 49 boxes loaded with a total of 661 pump-action rifles.
The discovery prompted further investigation into how the shipment entered the country and the circumstances surrounding its clearance.
As part of the investigation, the Customs Service declared the two officials wanted while other persons allegedly connected to the consignment were taken into custody.
