Buhari Writes National Assembly, Extends Medical Leave

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, February 5, 2017, informed the National Assembly of his decision to extend his medical leave in the United Kingdom to complete a series of medical tests recommended by his doctors.

According to a statement issued by Femi Adesina, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Buhari’s letter had been transmitted to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Adesina said the President would remain in London to complete the recommended tests and receive the results before returning to Nigeria.

“Mr. President expresses his sincere gratitude to Nigerians for their concern, prayers and kind wishes,” Adesina stated.

Buhari’s decision came as a disappointment to many Nigerians who had been eagerly awaiting his return to Abuja after his extended stay in the United Kingdom for medical attention.

The President had been expected to return to Nigeria on Sunday evening. However, he was reportedly advised by his doctors to complete the medical examinations and receive the results before making the trip back home.

Buhari’s health had become a major subject of public discussion, particularly after his earlier medical leave and prolonged absence from official duties.

Questions surrounding his condition had also generated considerable debate among politicians, commentators and Nigerians on social media.

The development further heightened public interest in the President’s health and the duration of his stay abroad, as Nigerians awaited official information from the Presidency.
