Oyo Commemorates World Tourism Day With Mountaineering

The Oyo State Government on Tuesday announced plans to commemorate the 2017 World Tourism Day with a mountaineering adventure at the Ado Awaye Suspended Lake in Iseyin area of the state.

According to the state government, the activities would take place on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, with the Ado Awaye Suspended Lake serving as the major attraction for the one-day programme.

The government said the climax of the event would be the climbing of the 246-step Ado Awaye hill leading to the suspended lake, regarded as one of the two suspended lakes located on a mountain in the world.

Speaking on the programme, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun, said stakeholders in the tourism industry, members of the media and the general public were expected to participate in the event.

Arulogun said the programme was being organised to mark the 2017 World Tourism Day, with the theme, “Sustainable Tourism, A Tool for Development.”

He disclosed that activities lined up for the day would include a trip to the Ado Awaye lake, a performance by the Oyo State Cultural Troupe, picnicking, music, comedy and prizes for the three fastest climbers.

According to the commissioner, participants would also use the occasion to discuss how tourism could contribute to sustainable development and provide an alternative source of revenue for the country.

Arulogun described tourism as a viable sector capable of contributing to economic development beyond the country’s traditional dependence on oil revenue.

He urged stakeholders in the tourism industry to partner with the state government in developing and promoting tourism attractions across Oyo State.

“We need to make our tourism sites attractive for the people, and that is why we have decided to promote domestic tourism. We need to keep our currency in the country. Our philosophy is to identify, package and promote our tourist attractions,” Arulogun said.
