substantive Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan appointed former player Olumide Edith Agoye as its substantive head coach in October 2017, following the departure of Fatai Amoo.
Agoye, who had previously served as chief coach under Amoo, was selected after the club interviewed several candidates for the vacant position.
The appointment came shortly after Amoo was relieved of his duties following Shooting Stars’ relegation from the Nigerian top flight at the end of the 2016/17 season.
3SC Executive Chairman, Gbolagade Busari, said Agoye’s familiarity with the team and his understanding of the development structure at the club influenced the management’s decision.
Busari explained that a significant number of the players were products of the club’s feeder system, making Agoye’s previous experience with the squad an advantage as the club sought to build a competitive team for the new season.
“Majority of our players are from the feeders and to continue inspire their development, we felt Agoye is in good position to do this,” Busari said.
Agoye, who had played for 3SC during his football career, was given the task of guiding the Ibadan club back to the Nigerian top flight after its relegation.
The appointment also represented an opportunity for the club to maintain continuity within its technical structure, with Agoye already familiar with several members of the playing squad and the club’s developmental system.
The former striker was 41 at the time of his appointment and had also featured for other Nigerian clubs, including Enyimba, before moving into coaching.
Contemporary reports noted that his appointment generated mixed reactions among some supporters, with some questioning his experience while others backed the decision because of his previous work with the team.
For 3SC, the immediate priority was to rebuild after relegation and mount a challenge for a return to the top division, with Agoye entrusted with leading that rebuilding process.
