Former Oyo State Governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) ahead of the 2019 general elections.
His emergence comes days after the former governor withdrew from the governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State.
In a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan on Sunday, Jeremiah Akande, Head of New Media and Public Affairs of the Alao-Akala Campaign Organisation, directed members of Alao-Akala’s political family to immediately integrate their various structures and support groups into the ADP.
Akande urged loyalists and supporters of the former governor to move their political structures to the new platform as the campaign for the 2019 election gathers momentum.
Alao-Akala had participated in the build-up to the APC governorship primary but eventually pulled out of the contest shortly before the exercise.
The APC primary, held on September 30, 2018, produced former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Chief Bayo Adelabu, as the party’s governorship candidate.
Following his withdrawal, Alao-Akala raised concerns about the conduct of the primary and alleged that there were attempts to impose an aspirant on party delegates.
The former governor’s decision to leave the APC contest and subsequently emerge on the ADP platform now sets the stage for another political contest in Oyo State as parties prepare for the 2019 governorship election.
