Former Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed a report circulating on social media claiming that he vowed not to be buried in his country home, Ukana, if former Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel defeated the APC governorship candidate, Obong Nsima Ekere, in the 2019 election.
The claim is contained in a statement issued by Anietie Ekong, then Special Assistant on Media to Senator Akpabio, in response to the publication attributed to what the statement described as media agents of the Akwa Ibom State Government.
According to Ekong, the reported statement attributed to Akpabio is false and does not represent anything said by the former governor.
He said Akpabio would not have made such a statement and described the report as an attempt to associate the senator with words he did not utter.
The statement further alleged that the circulation of the claim reflected the intensity of the political contest in Akwa Ibom ahead of the February 2019 governorship election.
It urged members of the public, particularly supporters of Akpabio and the All Progressives Congress, APC, to disregard the report.
Ekong also accused political opponents of attempting to damage Akpabio’s reputation by circulating statements he allegedly never made.
The controversy comes against the backdrop of the highly competitive 2019 governorship contest in Akwa Ibom, where the APC fielded Nsima Ekere against the incumbent governor, Udom Emmanuel, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The statement was signed by Ekong on October 29, 2018, in his capacity as Special Assistant on Media to Senator Akpabio.
