Senior lawyer, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, has been elected the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), emerging victorious in the association’s keenly contested national election.
The Chairman of the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), Aham Ejelam, announced the results at the NBA National Secretariat in Abuja on Sunday, declaring Badejo-Okusanya winner after she secured 12,317 votes, representing 47.18 per cent of the total votes cast.
She defeated her closest challenger, Lateef Akangbe, who polled 7,934 votes (30.39 per cent), while the third candidate, Olumuyiwa Akinboro, garnered 5,855 votes, representing 22.43 per cent of the votes cast.
According to the ECNBA, a total of 26,106 lawyers voted in the election out of 82,172 registered voters, translating to a 31.86 per cent voter turnout.
With her victory, the 59-year-old legal practitioner becomes the 33rd President of the NBA, one of Nigeria’s most influential professional bodies.
A native of Abeokuta, Ogun State, Badejo-Okusanya is the daughter of the late Professor Olufolabi Olumide, the renowned surgeon and pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University.

The election also produced other national officers of the association. Oghenero Okoro emerged First Vice-President with 11,024 votes, while Afam Okeke was elected General Secretary after polling 8,478 votes.
Similarly, Aghogho Gladys won the office of Assistant General Secretary with 14,312 votes, while Chinelo Ofoegbunam secured the position of Welfare Secretary with 14,911 votes.
Speaking shortly after the declaration of the results, outgoing NBA President, Afam Osigwe, commended the resilience of the Electoral Committee, revealing that the election survived attempts to compromise its integrity, including a cyberattack that forced the committee to rebuild and migrate its ICT infrastructure to a more secure server before successfully concluding the exercise.
The successful conduct of the election has been widely viewed as another significant milestone in the NBA’s commitment to strengthening internal democracy and credible leadership succession
