The dramatic rescue of the 44 pupils and teachers abducted from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State was the culmination of more than a month of painstaking intelligence gathering, coordinated security operations and precision planning that dismantled a notorious terrorist network without endangering the lives of the captives.
Fresh details released by the Nigerian Army on Friday revealed that the operation, described as one of the most carefully executed rescue missions in recent times, involved troops of the 2 Division, Nigerian Army, led by the General Officer Commanding, Major General Chibueze Nnebeife, working alongside elite security and intelligence units across the country.
The operation drew personnel from the Office of the National Security Adviser through the National Counter Terrorism Centre, the Defence Headquarters, Special Forces of the Army, Navy and Air Force, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the National Intelligence Agency, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, as well as Amotekun operatives, local hunters and vigilantes.
Rather than launch a hasty assault, security operatives embarked on a sustained intelligence-driven campaign aimed at identifying the masterminds behind the May 15 abduction, mapping their operational structure and cutting off their sources of support.
The search soon narrowed to the vast Old Oyo National Park, where investigators uncovered the terrorists’ hideouts, logistics routes and network of informants believed to have facilitated the kidnapping.
Security sources disclosed that simultaneous operations were subsequently carried out within Oyo State and in several other states, leading to multiple arrests of suspected collaborators and members of the criminal syndicate.
The coordinated raids dealt a crippling blow to the kidnappers’ operations, disrupting their communication channels and supply lines while mounting relentless pressure on the gang.
Faced with an increasingly shrinking operational space and sustained security pressure, the kidnappers eventually abandoned their demands and released all 44 captives unconditionally.
Military authorities said every phase of the operation was meticulously planned to prevent collateral damage and ensure that the children and teachers were rescued unharmed.
Although the mission ended successfully, the Army disclosed that some members of the security forces paid the ultimate price, suffering casualties during the course of the operation.
The rescued pupils and teachers are currently receiving medical care at an undisclosed hospital ahead of their formal handover to the Oyo State Government for reunion with their families.
The Army said follow-up operations are already underway to track down fleeing members of the terrorist network and dismantle any remaining cells linked to the abduction.
The General Officer Commanding commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing strategic direction and the resources that made the complex operation possible.
He also acknowledged Governor Seyi Makinde, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, the Directors-General of the DSS and NIA, and other security agencies for what he described as seamless inter-agency collaboration.
He further thanked the media and Nigerians for their patience, support and confidence throughout the 56-day ordeal, urging citizens to remain vigilant and continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies in the collective effort to rid the country of criminal elements.
The successful operation has brought an emotional end to one of Oyo State’s most traumatic kidnapping incidents, with the rescue standing as a testament to the growing synergy among Nigeria’s security and intelligence agencies in tackling terrorism and violent crime.
