Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have intercepted a suspected foreign drug courier and recovered a large cache of illicit drugs, alcoholic beverages and other prohibited items allegedly meant for terrorists operating in the Lake Chad Islands.
The operation, carried out by troops of Sector 3 on Thursday along the Maiduguri–Monguno road, followed credible intelligence on the movement of supplies believed to be destined for terrorist enclaves in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The suspect, identified as Mrs. Rachael Samuel, 48, a Chadian national from Kelo in Chari-Baguirmi Province, was arrested while travelling in a suspicious vehicle towards Kwatan Doron Baga.
Recovered items included seven compressed bundles of suspected Cannabis sativa weighing about 30 kilogrammes, two 10-litre containers of hydromercuric chloride, popularly known as “Suck and Die,” one carton containing 48 bottles of dry gin, 61 bottles of herbal alcoholic beverages, a mobile phone, two ATM cards, cash and other personal effects. The military said the seized items are valued at millions of naira.
The suspect is currently in military custody, while the recovered exhibits have been secured pending handover to the appropriate law enforcement agency for further investigation and prosecution.
According to the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, preliminary investigations indicate the prohibited items were being transported to terrorist elements hiding within the Lake Chad Islands.
The military noted that intelligence has consistently shown that terrorist groups rely on illicit drugs and intoxicants to stimulate fighters, suppress fear and sustain violent operations. It said the latest interception has disrupted another critical logistics channel supporting insurgent activities in the North East.
The Theatre Command commended the troops for their vigilance and professionalism, assuring Nigerians that operations against terrorists and their collaborators would continue without relent.
