As Osun State marks its 35th anniversary, the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Aremo Adekunle Alao has congratulated the people of the state, celebrating its remarkable journey of progress, unity, cultural pride and development.
Alao, popularly known as Lele, in his anniversary message, described the milestone as an opportunity to reflect on Osun’s achievements over the past three and a half decades while looking ahead to a more prosperous future.
Osun State was created on August 27, 1991, out of the old Oyo State by the military administration of the then Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, with Osogbo as its capital.
The creation followed years of agitation by traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders who championed the quest for a distinct Osun identity.
For Alao, the 35th anniversary represents more than a celebration of the state’s age. It is also a moment to honour the sacrifices of the founding fathers whose determination helped bring the dream of Osun State to fruition.
He highlighted the state’s enduring identity as the “State of the Living Spring,” noting that its heritage, people and cultural richness remain among its greatest assets.
His message also emphasised the importance of unity as Osun moves into another phase of its development. According to the anniversary message, the collective responsibility of residents and leaders should be to build a stronger Osun capable of meeting the aspirations of present and future generations.
“Celebrating 35 years of progress, unity and development,” the message stated, while expressing optimism that Osun would continue to shine as the State of the Living Spring.
Alao further urged stakeholders to preserve the state’s heritage and pride while supporting initiatives capable of improving the lives of its people, particularly through education, human capital development and sustainable growth.
Education remains particularly significant in Osun’s development agenda, with the SUBEB chairman’s message coming against the backdrop of the importance of investing in younger generations as future custodians of the state’s legacy.
Osun has, over the years, developed into one of Nigeria’s culturally significant states, with historic centres such as Ile-Ife and Osogbo contributing significantly to its identity and tourism appeal.
The state is also home to the internationally recognised Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove and a rich calendar of traditional festivals.
As the anniversary celebration provides an opportunity to look back at 35 years of achievements and challenges, Alao’s message reinforces the need for collective commitment to building a greater Osun.
He wished the state continued progress and prosperity, stressing the importance of a shared vision that would ensure that the sacrifices of its founding fathers translate into a brighter future for generations yet unborn.
“Our Heritage, Our Pride, Our Future” remains the central message of the anniversary celebration, underscoring the enduring connection between Osun’s rich past, its present achievements and the possibilities that lie ahead.
