2 ex-bankers arrested for stealing dead customer's money in Makurdi

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested two former staff of Union Bank in Makurdi for allegedly stealing the sum of N14m belonging to a dead customer.

Makurdi Command of the anti-graft agency arrested Idah Ogoh and Agbo Okwute on Friday, 21 June, 2024 in Makurdi, Benue State.

A statement by EFCC on its social media page stated that arrest followed a petition against them by the bank on  fraudulent debits on a deceased customer,  Emmanuel Azer Agenna’s  account.

According to the statement, the suspects' dealings were uncovered when family approached the bank for the balance on the account of the deceased for probate processing.

On getting hint of the balance in the account, the family disagreed with it and subsequently sent a complaint to the bank regarding unauthorised debits on the account

The statement added that the bank conducted an internal inquiry in response to the accusations, and the results showed that on May 10, 2023, Ifah Ogoh, a sales and service associate, obtained a debit card on the deceased's customer account, which the bank had authorized on the same day.

Subsequent investigation by the bank revealed that the card obtained by Ogoh was given to another Sales and Service Associate, Agbo Omwute, who subsequently gave the card to a conspirator to transfer and withdraw money from the deceased's account.

The suspects allegedly made many withdrawals using the accomplice.

The suspects would be brought before the court upon completion of the investigations.
