State Burial For Late Ex-Oyo Gov. Olunloyo To Hold May 20-22


A 3-day state burial program has been announced for the late former governor of Old Oyo State, Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemino Olunloyo (VOSO).

Olunloyo, a Math genius and an elder statesman, passed away at 89, a few days to his 90th birthday, on Sunday, 6th April, 2025 after a brief illness.

His burial, to hold in conjunction with Oyo and Osun states, is, however, slated between May 20 and 22, 2025.

On Tuesday, 20 May, there will be Classical Music Night of Tributes, and a Wake on Wednesday, 21 May. 

A Funeral Service, Private Family Internment and Reception will all hold on Thursday, 22 May at yet to be disclosed venues.

"All events will take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. More details to follow. Thank you," the message on a flier shared on Facebook by Nigerian media personality, Dele Momodu, partly reads.

Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, in his lifetime, was a renowned scholar and distinguished statesman.

At the age of 27, Olunloyo served in the cabinet of Dr. Moses Majekodunmi as Commissioner for Economic Development for the Western Region in 1962. He was re-appointed for same post by Colonel Adeyinka Adebayo, a military governor of Western State.

He was twice Commissioner for Community Development, Education, Special Duties, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, who crowned the immediate past Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. Also the immediate past Soun of Ogbomosho, Oba Oyewunmi was crowned under his supervision Commissioner.

Olunloyo also served as Chairman of the Western Nigerian Development Corporation.

He was governor of the Old Oyo State between October 1983 and 31 December, 1983 when General Muhammadu Buhari took over and dismissed the elected government.

He was the Balogun of Oyo.
