In a rather interesting turn of event, Senator Samuel Anyanwu has been reinstated as National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Acting National Chairman of the party, Ambassador Iliya Damagun, made the announcement on Wednesday, signaling a major twist in the ongoing internal wrangling and realignments within PDP.
He made the announcement during a press briefing at the party's national secretariat in Abuja.
With Damagum at the press briefing were notable leaders of the party including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other key stakeholders.
Damagum admitted that the decision to reinstate Anyanwu, an ally of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, into the National Working Committee (NWC), was “difficult” but ultimately necessary for the party’s cohesion.
“This was a critical decision,” Damagum said. “Anyanwu is resuming as the National Secretary. Like INEC said, they don’t have our notice, so what we will have on June 30th is an extended Caucus.”
He further announced that the planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting had been canceled, noting that the party would now hold an expanded caucus meeting instead.
“At the next Caucus, we will take a decision leading to a proper NEC,” he added.
The reinstatement follows a high-level meeting between PDP leaders and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, held on Tuesday in Abuja.
The meeting was aimed at resolving procedural disputes surrounding the party’s internal affairs and the scheduling of its NEC gathering.
