President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, effective today, February 24, 2026.
A press statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, notes that Egbetokun cited pressing family considerations as the reason for his departure.
President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation for Mr. Egbetokun's decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, acknowledging his dedication and professionalism.
Egbetokun, appointed in June 2023, was serving a four-year term due to conclude in June 2027.
In light of current national security challenges, the President has approved the immediate appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to serve as Acting Inspector-General of Police.
President Tinubu expressed confidence in AIG Disu's experience and leadership to guide the force during this critical period.
In adherence to the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to consider AIG Disu's substantive appointment, which will then be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.
The administration reaffirms its commitment to enhancing national security and strengthening the Nigeria Police Force.
