It was a gathering of family, friends, associates, traditional rulers, politicians, journalists, corporate players and members of Ibadan’s social establishment and a celebration of a life well lived on Sunday, August 9, 2026, as the family of the late High Chief Rasheed Olalekan Alabi, D.Litt (h.c), Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, hosted the 8-Day Fidau prayer and reception in his honour at the International Conference Centre (ICC), University of Ibadan.
The late Oloye Lekan Alabi, who died on August 1 in Lagos and was buried according to Muslim rites in Ibadan on August 2, was celebrated not only as a respected traditional chief but also as a veteran journalist, public affairs analyst, corporate communications expert, culture ambassador and prominent Ibadan socialite whose remarkable life cut across several important sectors of society.
From the solemn Fidau prayer to the lavish reception that followed, the occasion was a fitting celebration of a man whose influence stretched from the newsroom to the boardroom, from traditional institutions to corporate Nigeria, and from the world of public affairs to Ibadan’s highly respected social and cultural circles.
Beyond the celebration, there is no doubt that Oloye Lekan Alabi lived a full and impactful life.
From journalism to broadcasting, corporate communications to public relations, traditional chieftaincy to cultural advocacy, literature to social engagement, he left footprints in many places and built relationships across generations.
His 8-Day Fidau was therefore more than a funeral ceremony. It was a gathering of the people whose lives he touched, the institutions he served, the communities he represented and the family that carries his name forward. City People’s Dare Adeniran (08057639079) was at the Fidau and the royal reception and captured all the behind the scene gists. Enjoy it.
FIDAU PRAYER OPENS THE DAY
The programme began with a solemn Fidau prayer for the repose of the soul of the deceased, with special prayers also offered for his immediate and extended family and the aged mother he left behind. Top Islamic clerics were on ground to lead the religious rites, with the Ajanasi Agba, the Chief Interpreter of Ibadanland, delivering a short but powerful sermon that reflected on life, mortality, good deeds and the responsibility of the living to leave behind worthy legacies.
The prayer session provided a deeply spiritual beginning to the day, as family members, traditional chiefs, friends and associates joined the clerics in seeking Allah’s mercy for the departed and strength for the family he left behind.
Several dignitaries also attended the Fidau, including representatives of the Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, alongside other prominent personalities who came to identify with the Alabi family at a moment of celebration of a good life of their patriarch.
FROM FIDAU TO A RECEPTION FIT FOR ROYALTY
After the Fidau prayer, guests moved into the main hall of the International Conference Centre, where the atmosphere changed from solemn reflection to a beautifully packaged celebration of the life and accomplishments of the late Oloye.
The reception was nothing short of befitting the stature of a man who represented Ibadan royalty, culture and intellectual sophistication. The hall was transformed into a miniature paradise with an elegant combination of cream, chocolate and white, creating a warm and sophisticated ambience that perfectly complemented the solemnity of the occasion.
Different portraits of the deceased adorned the partitioned walkways and strategic sections of the hall, giving guests a visual journey through different stages of his life. The decoration was further enhanced by carefully positioned lighting and a giant screen behind the high table, which continuously displayed photographs, interviews and memorable clips from events attended by Baba during his remarkable lifetime.
BISI KOLAPO, ALFA TIOJA OPEN RECEPTION WITH PRAYERS
The reception formally commenced with prayers from both Christian and Islamic traditions. Pastor Mrs. Bisi Kolapo offered the opening Christian prayer, while Alfa Tioja followed with the Islamic opening prayer, setting the tone for an event that brought together people from different religious and social backgrounds in honour of one man.
It was a fitting reflection of the broad relationships the late Oloye cultivated throughout his lifetime, as people from different walks of life came together with one common purpose — to celebrate his memory and console his family.
THE CHILDREN GAVE BABA THE SEND-OFF HE DESERVED
One of the biggest highlights of the occasion was the impressive presence of the late chief’s children, Barrister Olayemi Alabi, Barrister (Mrs.) Modupeola Odusola, Barrister (Mrs.) Abimbola Lawson and Mr. Olatunji Alabi, who stood firmly beside their mother and gave their father a farewell that reflected the dignity and values he represented.
The children, alongside their spouses and grandchildren, first appeared in beautiful white outfits for the Fidau before changing into elegant grey ensembles, with the women adding touches of green lace, green Sanyan Iro and green-pronounced Sego Gele, while the men appeared in white with green caps delicately accented with gold.
As the reception progressed, they changed again into specially branded Batik Kampala outfits bearing the name of their late father, turning their attire into another beautiful tribute to his memory.
Their mother, Chief (Mrs.) Adetokunbo Mojirade Alabi, looked elegant in an expensive blue lace embellished with silver sequins, complemented by a silver Gele and matching accessories.
The family’s show of unity and organisation was particularly touching because the children had clearly taken their father’s final wish to heart. In an interview shortly after his death, Dupe, the second child, had expressed her determination to give him a befitting farewell, saying she wanted to do it in such a way that her father would not appear to her and ask, “Jo, ṣe bó ṣe yẹ kó sinmi niyẹn?”
Judging from everything on display at the Fidau and reception, Baba certainly had little to complain about.
CHILDREN CONTINUE HIS LEGACY
Beyond the glamour of the occasion, what stood out was the quality and accomplishments of the late chief’s children, who have all established themselves in their various chosen careers while maintaining the values of discipline, excellence, service and family responsibility for which their father was known.
Their conduct throughout the funeral activities demonstrated that the legacy of Oloye Lekan Alabi is not merely preserved in photographs, books or traditional titles, but is also being carried forward through his children and grandchildren.
A LIFE THAT TOUCHED MANY SECTORS
Virtually every sector that the late Oloye belonged to during his lifetime was represented at the occasion, making the gathering a true reflection of the breadth of his relationships.
The media, corporate world, public relations profession, traditional institution, social establishment and cultural community all came together to pay their final respects to a man who successfully operated across several spheres without losing his identity or connection with Ibadan.
HIS ADOPTED CHILDREN SHOW LOVE
One of the touching highlights of the reception was the visible commitment of some of Oloye Lekan Alabi’s adopted children, who played significant roles in making the event a memorable one.
Among them was Engr. Muyiwa Babalola of Able Events, who, according to those close to the family, had been actively involved in arrangements from the day Baba passed on. Babalola provided the lighting, giant screens and other technical facilities deployed for the elaborate reception, ensuring that every aspect of the event was professionally coordinated.
Another of Baba’s adopted son who was conspicuously present was Mr. Victor Oyetoro of Odu’a Investment Company, who joined other family members, friends and associates in celebrating the life and legacy of the respected Ibadan chief.
Their presence and contributions were seen as more than mere support for an event. They reflected the depth of the relationships Oloye Alabi built over the years, particularly with younger men and women whom he treated as his own children, mentored and encouraged.

PRESIDENT TINUBU’S REPRESENTATIVE AT THE EVENT
President Bola Tinubu was represented at the reception by the Minister of Power and Ibadan Mogaji, Chief Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, whose presence further underscored the national relevance of the late Oloye’s personality and contributions.
Tegbe joined other dignitaries in honouring a man whose professional and traditional engagements made him a familiar figure among prominent personalities across generations.
MAKINDE’S DELEGATION STANDS WITH ALABI FAMILY
Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, was also represented at the occasion by a delegation comprising his Personal Assistant, Alhaji Akeem Azeez; Special Assistant on Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Rasheed Adewale; and Hon. Ramota Agberemi Dabo.
Their presence demonstrated the strong relationship between the late Oloye and the political and administrative establishment of Oyo State, particularly within Ibadan, where he remained a respected voice in traditional and public affairs.
SARAFADEN ALLI COMES WITH FULL FORCE
One of the prominent political figures at the reception was Barrister Sarafadeen Abiodun Alli, the Oyo State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who came out in full force to honour his late big brother.
The relationship between the two men went beyond politics, as both belonged to the prestigious Omo Ajorosun Club of Ibadan and were also members of the Olubadan-in-Council. Alli’s presence was therefore as much about family and friendship as it was about paying tribute to a senior associate who had played an important role in his life.
IBADAN SOCIAL CIRCLE PAYS ITS RESPECTS
Ibadan’s vibrant social establishment was also strongly represented at the occasion, with several prominent personalities turning up to identify with the Alabi family.
Among those spotted were Alhaji Musa Alubankudi, Alhaji Sina Alabi, the Ibadan North Local Government Renewed Hope Ambassador and a key figure in Barrister Alli’s campaign organisation, alongside several other notable members of Ibadan’s social community.
MRS. ALABI’S FRIENDS STAND BY HER
While the event celebrated the life of the late Oloye, it was also an important moment of support for his wife, Chief (Mrs.) Adetokunbo Mojirade Alabi, who was surrounded by friends and well-wishers throughout the programme.
Her friends, including Mrs. Lolade Sosayan, Mrs. Solape Adeyemi and Mrs. Nike Adeyemi, among others, were present to offer their support and stand with her during the difficult period.

OMO AJOROSUN CLUB TURNS OUT IN NUMBERS

Members came under the leadership of the club’s president, demonstrating the strong bond that existed between the deceased and the organisation he belonged to and contributed to during his lifetime.
CCII PAYS A FINAL TRIBUTE
The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) was also fully on ground, led by its President-General, Barrister Sulaimon Ajeniyi Ajewole.
The presence of the umbrella body for Ibadan indigenes further reflected the place occupied by Oloye Lekan Alabi within Ibadan’s traditional and cultural establishment.
OLUBADAN’S STAFF OF OFFICE SPOTTED AT THE RECEPTION
The Olubadan of Ibadanland was represented at the event, with the Olubadan’s staff of office conspicuously seen at the reception, symbolising the institution’s recognition of the passing of one of its notable chiefs.
For a man who rose through the Ibadan traditional chieftaincy system to become Abese Olubadan, the presence of the palace was particularly significant.
IBADAN MOGAJIS COME OUT FOR ONE OF THEIR OWN
Ibadan Mogajis also turned up in impressive numbers, led by their President, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, alongside several other Mogajis from different family compounds.
Their attendance further demonstrated that the late Oloye was not merely a traditional title holder but an important figure within the intricate traditional structure of Ibadanland.
OGUN VETERAN JOURNALISTS REMEMBER A COLLEAGUE
The Ogun State League of Veteran Journalists was also represented, with its Welfare Officer, Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji, leading the delegation to honour a man whose professional career spanned several decades of Nigerian journalism and broadcasting.
THE AJENGBE FAMILY STANDS SOLIDLY WITH THE ALABIS
Mr. Lanre Alabi, the younger brother of the deceased, and members of the wider Ajengbe family stood firmly behind the immediate family throughout the funeral activities.
Their presence provided another layer of family solidarity as the children, widow and extended relations celebrated the life of a man whose family roots remained an important part of his identity.
ODU’A INVESTMENT COMPANY REMEMBERS ITS PIONEER CORPORATE AFFAIRS CHIEF
One of the strongest corporate representations came from Odu’a Investment Company Limited, where the late Oloye served as the pioneer Corporate Affairs General Manager.
Former and serving prominent members of the conglomerate attended to honour their former colleague, including former Group Managing Director, Alhaji Adebayo Jimoh, and other senior figures.
The company’s presence was particularly significant because Oloye Lekan Alabi played a pioneering role in building the corporate communications structure of the organisation and remained connected to many of its former and current executives.
