Princess Princess Folashade Adeyemi, daughter of the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Oyo State House of Assembly election in 2015, has dismissed reports that she had withdrawn from the race as “evil” and “laughable.”
The rumour reportedly circulated ahead of the state assembly election scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2015, with supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Atiba constituency allegedly linked to the claim.
Folashade, however, denied stepping down from the contest and urged her supporters not to be distracted by what she described as political propaganda.
She also warned her political opponents against dragging the name of the Alaafin into partisan campaigns, stressing that the traditional ruler was a father to all his subjects regardless of their political affiliations.
According to her, the Alaafin should not be portrayed as supporting any particular political party for electoral purposes.
She further argued that if the monarch’s historical political association was to be discussed, it should be recalled that he was associated with the formation of the PDP.
Folashade made the comments in a message posted on her Facebook page, where she also appealed to her supporters to remain steadfast and vote for her and other PDP candidates during the election.
In the message, she accused her opponents of spreading what she described as propaganda and called on them to keep the Alaafin’s name out of their campaign.
“Oyo APC House of Assembly candidate representing Atiba Constituency and his team have to stop their useless propaganda. Leave Alaafin alone and out of your campaign,” she wrote.
She further questioned the use of the monarch’s name in the campaign, asking: “Stop using Alaafin’s name to manipulate people to vote for your party. Is Alaafin your manifesto?”
The controversy came at a time when political activities were intensifying across Oyo State ahead of the 2015 governorship and House of Assembly elections.
With the election only days away, Folashade urged her supporters to disregard the withdrawal rumour and remain committed to her candidacy and the PDP.
