Updated! Ooni Of Ife’s Last Moments On Earth Revealed

We had earlier brought you the news of the death of the Yoruba paramount ruler, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade (Olubuse II), who passed away in London on Tuesday, July 28, 2015.

The revered monarch died at a London hospital after being flown out of Nigeria for medical treatment.

According to information gathered at the time, Oba Sijuwade had reportedly taken ill after he was said to have slumped on Thursday, July 23.

He was subsequently rushed to Ibadan Airport, from where he was flown to Lagos in an air ambulance before continuing his journey to London for further medical attention.

Sources close to the development had indicated that the monarch’s condition appeared to have stabilised after his arrival in London.

However, his health reportedly deteriorated days later before he eventually passed away on Tuesday.

The death of the Ooni brought an end to the reign of one of the most prominent traditional rulers in Nigeria and one of the longest-serving occupants of the ancient Ife throne.

Oba Okunade Sijuwade ascended the throne on December 6, 1980, succeeding the late Oba Adesoji Aderemi, the first Ooni of Ife in modern Nigeria.

Born on January 1, 1930, Oba Sijuwade was 85 years old at the time of his death.

His reign lasted for more than three decades, during which he remained an influential figure in Yoruba traditional affairs and Nigerian public life.
