Former Rivers State Governor and Director-General of the 2015 All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Organisation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, has finally been screened by the Nigerian Senate following a series of questions from senators.
Amaechi’s screening had been put on hold for some time, amid developments surrounding the confirmation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees.
There was, however, a mild drama at the beginning of the session when the then Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, announced that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus had no questions for the former governor.
The Senate Leader at the time, Senator Ali Ndume, immediately supported the position and suggested that Amaechi should simply take a bow and leave.
Some senators, however, disagreed with the suggestion, insisting that they wanted the opportunity to question the nominee regardless of the position taken by the PDP caucus.
Senate President Bukola Saraki subsequently ruled that Amaechi should be accorded the same preferential treatment given to former legislators appearing before the Senate for screening.
Despite the ruling, some senators insisted on asking the former governor questions before he could leave the chamber.
Amaechi eventually answered a number of questions put to him by the senators before he was asked to take a bow and go.
His screening brought an end to the wait surrounding his appearance before the Senate and moved his ministerial confirmation process to the next stage.
