Is CBN Deputy Governor Bayo Adelabu Thinking Politics? How He Emerges As Ibadan’s Hottest Young Celebrity

There are growing indications that Adebayo Adelabu, then a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), could be considering a move into Oyo State politics, even though he has yet to publicly declare any political ambition.

At social functions across Ibadan, Adelabu is increasingly being referred to by some admirers as a potential governor, with conversations about his political future becoming more noticeable.

There are also claims that the respected banker has been quietly consulting with political stakeholders, although no public confirmation of such consultations has emerged.

Adelabu himself has not made any official statement indicating that he intends to contest for political office. His professional background, however, continues to fuel speculation about his possible entry into politics.

Before joining the CBN, Adelabu built a strong career in the banking sector. He served as Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer of First Bank of Nigeria, having previously worked in senior finance and strategy roles at Standard Chartered Bank.

He was appointed a Deputy Governor of the CBN in 2014. The apex bank subsequently redeployed him to the Corporate Services Directorate, while its records show that he eventually left the Bank in July 2018.

Beyond his professional credentials, Adelabu’s growing public profile in Ibadan is another factor attracting attention.

The banker is increasingly becoming a familiar face at high-profile social gatherings, where he commands considerable attention and is often surrounded by friends, associates and admirers seeking his attention.

For some of his supporters, three qualities stand out: his professional pedigree, his perceived accessibility and his relatively young age at the time.

Adelabu also carries a notable political and family legacy. He is a grandson of the late Adegoke Adelabu, popularly known as “Penkelemesi,” the prominent Ibadan politician and nationalist whose name remains deeply associated with the political history of the old Western Region.

With his growing visibility in Ibadan and increasing conversations around his political future, attention is now turning to one question: is Adebayo Adelabu preparing for a life beyond banking and into Oyo politics?

For now, the answer remains with Adelabu himself.
