The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly arrested former Osun State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyiola Omisore, over allegations linked to the funding of the 2014 governorship election.
Omisore was reportedly picked up in Abuja in connection with an investigation into alleged diversion of funds from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), according to a report by SaharaReporters.
Sources cited by the online publication said the former senator was taken into custody for questioning over allegations that he received more than N1.3 billion allegedly diverted from funds under the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.
According to the report, the money was allegedly used to support the PDP’s campaign during the 2014 Osun State governorship election, which Omisore contested against the incumbent, Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
SaharaReporters further reported that the EFCC had earlier declared Omisore wanted as part of its investigation into the alleged movement of funds linked to the election.
The allegations formed part of wider investigations into the disbursement of funds from the Office of the National Security Adviser during the period surrounding the 2015 general elections.
At the time, Omisore was a prominent PDP figure in Osun State and the party’s governorship candidate in the 2014 election.
The claims reported against him were allegations under investigation and did not by themselves constitute a finding of guilt.
