The Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (FIBAN) has called for peace, prayers and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians as Muslims mark the end of the 2017 Ramadan fast.
In a message to Muslim faithful across the country, the association congratulated them on the successful completion of Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, and urged Nigerians to uphold the lessons of the holy month in their daily lives.
FIBAN President, Comrade Desmond Nwachukwu, in a message conveyed through the National Secretary, Bisi Ajiboye, called on Nigerians to continue to promote peaceful coexistence across ethnic and religious lines.
Nwachukwu also urged members of the association to maintain peace and demonstrate good conduct as the FIBAN state general elections coincided with the end of the Ramadan period.
He appealed to all aspirants and members to respect the rules governing the electoral process and allow a peaceful atmosphere to prevail before, during and after the elections.
“I’m personally urging all members of our great association to use the opportunity of this holy month that coincided with our states’ general election to allow peace to reign and play the game according to the rules,” he said.
Nwachukwu assured aspirants across the country that the electoral process would provide a level playing field for all contestants.
He further described the repositioning of FIBAN as a collective responsibility of members, urging them to work together towards strengthening the association and improving its standing within the broadcasting industry.
According to him, members needed to work collectively to achieve the association’s objectives, protect its dignity and contribute meaningfully to the development of society.
“We must dream and team together, work and win together, stand and work together to restructure and re-brand our association and, by extension, play our prominent roles in making our society a better place to live in,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the FIBAN Electoral Committee, Alhaji Akinkunmi Alabi, said the 2017 election would hold simultaneously across the country.
According to the timetable released by the electoral committee, screening of candidates was scheduled for June 21, 2017, while accreditation of members and voting were scheduled for July 5, 2017.
Alabi appealed to members and stakeholders to cooperate with the electoral committee to ensure that the association conducted a free, fair and credible election.
