Old students of Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan, have renewed their commitment to supporting education and contributing to the development of their alma mater as members of the 1982 set gathered for their 2017 reunion.
The two-day reunion, held between September 30 and October 1, 2017, at Pristine Guests’ Place, Alalubosa GRA, Ibadan, brought together members of the set for discussions, lectures, fellowship and other activities.
Speaking at the reunion, the National President of Lagelu Grammar School Old Boys Association (LAGSOBA), Prof. Emmanuel Olufemi Omisore of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, urged individuals, organisations and other influential Nigerians to support governments at all levels in improving the country’s education sector.
Omisore said the economic challenges facing the country at the time made contributions from individuals and organised groups even more important, stressing that investment in education was essential to securing the future of young Nigerians.
“When we take care of education, we take care of the future. The present generation of youths must be supported to acquire quality education,” he said.
He commended members of LAGSOBA for their contributions towards improving facilities and supporting educational activities at Lagelu Grammar School, urging them to do more as the school approached its 60th anniversary in January 2018.
According to him, committees had already been established to coordinate activities for the anniversary, with plans to use the occasion to further improve the school and support its students.
Chairman of the 1982 set, Sunday Amoo, highlighted some of the contributions made by members towards the development of the school.
He said the set had paid West African Examinations Council (WAEC) fees for some indigent students and provided stools for use in the school’s laboratories, among other interventions.
The reunion also featured lectures on agriculture, personal health and insurance. One of the members, Dr Kayode Afolabi, a former Oyo State Commissioner for Health and then Director at the Federal Ministry of Health in Abuja, spoke on personal health.
Another member, Pastor Taiwo Otegbeye, a former Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Culture, delivered a lecture on personal insurance policy choices, while members also received guidance on opportunities for wealth creation through agriculture.
A major highlight of the reunion was the inauguration and swearing-in of the national executive officers of the 1982 set, led by Amoo.
The ceremony was conducted by Colonel Bola Ogunsanwo (rtd.), Chairman of the LAGSOBA Board of Trustees, who was also recognised as the set’s Role Model.
The board of trustees of the 1982 set was also inaugurated during the gathering, while a gala night and raffle draw formed part of the social activities.
The reunion concluded with a visit to Lagelu Grammar School in Agugu, Ibadan, where members had an opportunity to reconnect with the institution and reflect on its development.
Amoo expressed appreciation to members and guests who contributed to the success of the reunion, particularly those who travelled from outside Nigeria to attend.
He also acknowledged the contributions of members of the organising committee and other LAGSOBA officials, describing the reunion as an opportunity to strengthen the bond among members and renew their commitment to their alma mater.
