Oyo Awards Scholarships, Launches Education Trust Fund

The Oyo State Government has awarded full scholarships and university admission to two students who emerged among the state’s top performers in the 2017 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The beneficiaries, Irabor Isabelle Gelegu and Adekunle Oluwatoni Adedigba of Oritamefa Baptist Model School, were recognised for recording outstanding results in the examination.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi announced the scholarships during the official launch of the Oyo State Education Trust Fund in Ibadan, where prominent individuals, traditional rulers, philanthropists and corporate organisations pledged support for the initiative.

Ajimobi said the fund was established to support the development of education across the state, particularly through improvements in infrastructure, teaching materials and human capital.

According to him, education remained critical to the development of Oyo State and the country, stressing the need for individuals and organisations to contribute to the sector.

Chairman of the Oyo State Education Trust Fund, Chief Mrs Onikepo Akande, said funds raised would be used to address infrastructure and equipment needs in schools, as well as support teacher and student development.

She appealed to individuals, old students’ associations, philanthropists and corporate organisations to support the initiative.

The launch brought together stakeholders from the political, traditional, business and education sectors.
