An Ife prince and member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Albert Abiodun Adeogun, has emerged as the running mate to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, ahead of the September 22, 2018 governorship election.
Adeogun, who represents the Ife Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, is expected to join Adeleke in the PDP’s bid to wrestle power from the then ruling party in the state.
Born in Ile-Ife, Adeogun is the son of Prince Isaac Oyewole Adeogun of Olodo Compound, Ogboru Royal House of Ile-Ife, and Princess Ofobutu Ijaoja of Ooni Ilare Compound, also in the Ogboru Royal House.
He began his formal education at St. John’s Primary School, where he studied between 1952 and 1958. He later attended Ife-Oluwa Co-educational Grammar School in Osogbo, Osun State, completing his secondary education in 1968.
Adeogun joined the Federal Ministry of Information in Lagos in 1969 as a Clerical Officer. Through further private studies, including Advanced Level examinations and a Certificate in Accounting, he progressed to the position of Executive Officer, Accounts.
His academic career later took him to the University of Ibadan, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1980. He subsequently earned a Master’s degree in Political Science from the same university in October 1984.
He further studied law and obtained an LL.B degree from the University of Ibadan in 1988 before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School, where he obtained his Bachelor of Laws (BL) qualification in 1989.
Adeogun also undertook the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, with his primary place of assignment at Lagos Secondary School, Oshodi. He completed the programme in 1981.
His public service career subsequently took him into the Nigeria Customs Service, where he joined as a Superintendent of Customs in 1981 and rose through the ranks to become a Comptroller in 2003.
After several years in the Customs Service, Adeogun disengaged from the organisation in 2005 and ventured into partisan politics.
His political career later took him to the National Assembly, where he was elected in 2015 to represent the Ife Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Adeogun has also received a number of honours during his career. Among them is an honorary doctorate degree in Humanities reportedly conferred on him by Saint Thomas à Becket University, Canterbury, England, in September 2005.
He is a member of the International Association of Political Scientists and the Nigerian Bar Association. He has also been associated with the Ile-Ife legal community and traditional institutions, including the title of Okanlomo of Ipetumodu land.
A Christian of Anglican background, Adeogun is married and has children and grandchildren.
His emergence as Adeleke’s running mate adds another significant political figure to the PDP ticket as the party intensifies preparations for the September 22 governorship election in Osun State.
