Why Parents Choose TennyTan Nursery & Primary School In Abeokuta

For many parents, choosing the right school for their children goes beyond academic performance. A clean and conducive learning environment, qualified teachers, discipline, moral instruction, safety and opportunities for physical and social development are increasingly important considerations.

These are some of the qualities that TennyTan Group of Schools in Abeokuta, Ogun State, says it has prioritised since its establishment.

The philosophy behind the school reflects the widely quoted words of late South African President Nelson Mandela that education is a powerful instrument for transforming society and creating opportunities for future generations.

Founded by Chief (Mrs.) Funmi Lawson, TennyTan has built its educational programme around academic development, character formation and practical life skills.

According to the founder, the school is committed to creating an environment where children can learn, play and develop their abilities under the guidance of trained professionals.

One of the school’s stated core values is the development of discipline, honesty, humility, integrity, respect and moral responsibility, alongside academic excellence.

The school also says it provides equal educational opportunities for children irrespective of tribe, religion, nationality, gender, disability or social status.

TennyTan Group of Schools comprises TennyTan Kindergarten, Nursery and Primary School, as well as TennyTan Model College. Its kindergarten and daycare programme caters to young children whose parents may be at work, combining childcare with age-appropriate educational activities and supervised play.

The school’s journey began in Ibadan on June 1, 2014, at College Crescent, where it initially operated as Kindercare International Kiddies Arena.

The name was later changed to TennyTan, an acronym derived from the names of the founder’s sons, Teniola and Enitan.

Following the establishment of its Abeokuta branch in 2016, the school expanded its presence in the education sector, with its Abeokuta campus located at 2, Olusoji Idowu Avenue, Ile-Ise Awo, Ogun State.

According to Mrs. Lawson, the school places considerable emphasis on providing facilities that support not only academic learning but also the intellectual, moral, emotional and physical development of its pupils.

Explaining how she ventured into the education sector without initially having extensive experience in school administration, Lawson said her educational background gave her useful skills for understanding and communicating with her target audience.

She added that the school relies on qualified professionals for teaching, while receiving additional support from her brother, whom she described as an educationist.

“Our aim is to provide a balanced approach to learning while giving parents the peace of mind that their children will have fun as they develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually,” Lawson said.

She explained that the school’s approach goes beyond conventional classroom subjects such as reading, writing and mathematics.

According to her, pupils are also exposed to activities designed to develop confidence, independence, social interaction and practical life skills.

She noted that educational toys and supervised play are used to encourage motor development and teach children important social values such as sharing.

Through songs, role play and other activities, pupils are also introduced to lessons on personal hygiene, household responsibilities and cooperation.

“Our mission is to provide excellent care to our children and ensure their health and safety while in our care, while creating a fun and loving atmosphere where they can learn and grow,” she added.

Among the facilities available at the school are school buses for transporting pupils to and from school.

Lawson said the drivers are expected to possess valid driving licences and undergo additional training focused on the safe transportation and handling of children.

TennyTan also has a computer section where pupils are introduced to Information and Communication Technology. The school says it encourages the productive use of computers and modern technology as part of its educational vision.

Another facility is the school’s sick bay, which is intended to provide first aid for minor school-related injuries and attend to immediate health needs before further medical attention becomes necessary.

The school also maintains a library designed to support reading and learning outside the classroom.

According to Lawson, the combination of qualified teachers, facilities, childcare, academic instruction and character development forms part of the approach that has shaped TennyTan’s identity.

“We have an excellent, qualified and passionate team of teachers who give every child opportunities to grow and learn in a caring atmosphere,” she said.

Born into the family of Pa Folarin and Mrs. Mosunmola Akinremi, both deceased, Lawson holds a double-major degree in Advertising Technology and Web Design from Central Ohio Technical College, Columbus, Ohio, in the United States.

She is also pursuing another degree in Advertising at Franklin University, Ohio.

With its focus on early childhood care, academic development, character formation and practical learning, TennyTan continues to position itself as one of the schools seeking to provide a broad educational experience for children in Abeokuta.
