Passengers aboard an Enugu Air flight escaped what could have been a major aviation disaster after the aircraft made an emergency landing at the Benin Airport following an in-flight engine incident.
The aircraft, operated by Xejet on behalf of Enugu Air, reportedly developed a serious engine problem while en route, prompting the flight crew to immediately activate emergency procedures and divert to the nearest suitable airport in Benin City.
According to airline officials, the crew heard a loud bang from one of the aircraft’s engines during the flight. The abnormal engine indications forced the pilots to shut down the affected engine as a precaution before safely diverting the aircraft to Benin, where it landed without further incident.
All passengers and crew members were safely evacuated after the aircraft came to a stop, with no injuries recorded.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the occurrence, disclosing that the aircraft experienced an in-flight engine anomaly which necessitated the emergency diversion.
The bureau explained that after detecting abnormal engine indications, the flight crew followed established international safety procedures by shutting down the affected engine before proceeding to Benin, where the aircraft landed safely. Preliminary inspection reportedly revealed significant damage to the affected engine.
NSIB has since launched a full-scale investigation into the incident in line with international aviation safety standards under ICAO Annex 13 to determine the exact cause of the engine failure and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.
The latest incident has once again drawn attention to aviation safety in Nigeria, although experts noted that the successful handling of the emergency demonstrated the effectiveness of the crew’s training and the country’s emergency response procedures.
