“Why I Left Fuji For Gospel Music” — Gospel Act Glorious Paul

The name Glorious Paul is a strong one in the Yoruba gospel sector of the Nigerian music industry, also with his relationship with popular late Gospel musician Glorious Paul has revealed how he abandoned Fuji music for gospel after what he described as a spiritual encounter that changed the direction of his musical career.

The Yoruba gospel act, who has also been associated with the late Lagos-based cleric, Prophet Elijah Iretiola Ajanaku, founder of Christ Revival Victory International Church (CRVIC), recently spoke with City People about his journey into music and the decision that eventually led him into gospel.

According to Glorious Paul, his interest in music started about 22 years ago when he began performing Fuji. However, his mother was not comfortable with his choice of genre at the time and reportedly encouraged him to concentrate on his education.

“I started music roughly 22 years ago. I started as a Fuji artiste and back then my mum would discourage me from doing Fuji because Fuji music was termed and affiliated with bad acts,” he said.

“She told me that if I went into Fuji, she would stop my education, so I decided to drop Fuji for a while and face my education.”

Paul explained that his career took another turn after he said he had what he regarded as a spiritual encounter.

“Glory be to God, I heard God’s voice and He told me He gave me a gift and I wasn’t using it to glorify Him. I woke up from my sleep and headed for my pastor.

He told me I would face a lot of difficulties, but with God all things are possible. Ever since then, it’s been gospel,” he recalled.

Looking back at his career, the singer admitted that the journey has not been without challenges. He said there were moments when the difficulties he encountered in the music industry almost made him consider quitting.

“The journey so far hasn’t been easy, but glory be to God,” he said, adding that he had remained focused despite the obstacles.

The musician also spoke about his forthcoming third album, which he said was scheduled for release on October 11.

According to him, his first album, Eni Femi, was released four years earlier, while his second project, Igbesoke, followed two years later.

His latest album is titled Jesu Feranmi.
Speaking about collaborations on the new project, Glorious Paul disclosed that he featured fellow gospel artiste Princess Ifemide on one of the tracks.

“On one of the tracks in the new album, I did a love song and featured fellow gospel act, Princess Ifemide. She is the daughter of Prophet Elijah Ireti Ajanaku,” he said.

Paul also spoke about the kind of musicians he admires, saying he looks up to gospel artistes who remain committed to their faith and values despite the pressures that often come with the entertainment industry.

At the same time, he described himself as a free-spirited person who maintains friendships with musicians across different genres.

For Glorious Paul, the transition from Fuji to gospel was not simply a change in musical style but a decision he believes ultimately gave his career a new direction.
