A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Akwa Ibom State Government to deposit N20 billion in an interest-yielding account pending the determination of a legal dispute involving Mauritz Walton Nigeria Limited over consultancy fees relating to the Paris Club refund.
Justice Gabriel Kolawole issued the order in a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1154/2017, following an application by Mauritz Walton against the Minister of Finance, the Accountant-General of the Federation, the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Akwa Ibom State Government.
The company had approached the court over the alleged failure of the state government to pay consultancy fees for services it claimed to have rendered in connection with the state’s Paris Club refund.
The court directed that the money be paid into an interest-yielding account with any of First Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank or Zenith Bank pending further proceedings.
The matter was adjourned until January 30, 2018.
The dispute was part of a wider controversy surrounding the management of funds arising from the Paris Club refund to Nigerian states at the time.
