President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late elder statesman and progressive politician, Alhaji Ganiyu Kolapo Oseni, describing his passing as the loss of a trusted ally, loyal friend and unwavering defender of democracy.In a special tribute personally signed and dated July 3, 2026, the President expressed profound sorrow over Oseni’s death, saying although the veteran politician was no longer alive, the memories they shared and the legacy he left behind would continue to endure.
Tinubu described the deceased as a visionary administrator, accomplished statesman, progressive politician and trailblazer whose leadership, industry and relentless commitment to public service distinguished him throughout his lifetime.
Reflecting on Oseni’s contributions to Lagos State and the nation, the President recalled his pioneering role as the Organising Secretary of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in Lagos during the Second Republic. He noted that Oseni also helped lay the foundation for the Lagos State Printing Corporation, where a central mosque was recently dedicated in his honour.
Beyond his public accomplishments, Tinubu revealed that the late politician played a defining role in his own political journey.
“He was a leader, my ally, my comrade, a friend and a brother rolled into one,” the President wrote, adding that Oseni stood firmly behind him as he rose to become Senator representing Lagos West and later Governor of Lagos State.
The President also recounted their shared sacrifices during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, recalling that both men fought to defend the mandate of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and worked together to end military dictatorship.
Tinubu further disclosed that when he declared his intention to contest the presidency in 2022, Oseni encouraged his ambition with prayers, although his support was limited because he had relocated to the United States at the time.
According to the President, his administration is currently implementing some of the ideas and reforms they discussed together, with the goal of building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
Expressing gratitude for Oseni’s decades of service, Tinubu thanked him for his contributions to Lagos State, Nigeria and the progressive movement, describing him as “a brother and a friend” who stood by him through the years.
The President prayed for Almighty Allah to comfort the deceased’s immediate family, especially his wife and children, and grant them the strength to uphold the values and legacy he left behind.
“As Kola Oseni’s remains are laid to rest, Remi and I wish him eternal rest. May Almighty Allah grant him the best part of Aljanna,” Tinubu concluded.
Alhaji Ganiyu Kolapo Oseni is widely remembered as one of the notable figures of Nigeria’s progressive political movement whose lifelong commitment to democratic governance and public service left an enduring mark on Lagos State and the country at large.
