Federal Government on Friday disclosed that eight suspected kidnappers involved in the abduction of pupils and teachers in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been arrested, while several others were killed during the rescue operation.
The government also insisted that no ransom or prisoner swap was made to secure the release of the victims, saying the operation was carried out solely through the efforts of security agencies.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made the disclosure in a follow-up statement posted on his verified X handle after confirming the successful rescue of all the abducted pupils and teachers.
According to him, the arrested suspects are currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), while security operatives neutralised other members of the gang during the operation.
Onanuga said the alleged kingpin whose release was demanded by the kidnappers remains in detention and is being prosecuted for terrorism-related offences.
“There was no quid pro quo in the rescue. The terrorist kingpin whose release the kidnappers demanded is still being prosecuted for his atrocities,” he said.
He added that security agencies would soon brief the public on the details of the operation.
The victims were abducted on May 15 when armed men invaded three schools in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Orire Local Government Area, throwing the area into panic.
The attack turned more tragic after one teacher was killed during the invasion, while another was later beheaded in captivity, a gruesome act captured in a video that sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger action against insecurity.
The successful rescue of the victims has brought relief to their families and residents, ending weeks of uncertainty over their fate.
