SWEGOP Warns Politicians Against False Claims, Demands Urgent Road Repairs

The South West Guild of Online Publishers (SWEGOP) has called for a shift towards issue-based political campaigns, warning politicians against the use of misinformation, unfounded claims and unsubstantiated allegations to gain public support.

In a statement jointly issued by its Acting Chairman, Chief Tunde Busari, and Publicity Secretary, Mr. Remi Oladoye, the guild urged political actors to make policies, development plans and practical solutions to public challenges the focus of their campaigns.

SWEGOP maintained that politicians seeking elective offices should demonstrate their readiness to govern by clearly explaining how they intend to tackle the challenges confronting the electorate, rather than resorting to personal attacks and misleading narratives.

It warned that the circulation of false information and allegations without credible evidence could erode public confidence in the political process, stressing the need for responsible communication and constructive engagement throughout the campaign period.

The guild further called on political stakeholders to promote peaceful democratic participation by presenting their ideas and engaging voters on issues that directly affect their welfare and development.

In a separate appeal, SWEGOP urged the Federal Government and state governments to declare a state of emergency on roads following widespread damage attributed to rainfall across several locations.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of road infrastructure, the organisation noted that some roads had been washed away or made impassable, leaving motorists and other road users to contend with serious difficulties.

It called on the relevant authorities to move swiftly to rehabilitate damaged roads, improve drainage infrastructure and adopt sustainable measures to prevent recurring damage, particularly during the rainy season.

According to the guild, urgent intervention has become necessary to protect lives, ease transportation difficulties and prevent further disruption to commercial activities and economic development.

SWEGOP also advocated a coordinated response involving the relevant levels of government to tackle the worsening road conditions, insisting that lasting solutions were needed to ease the burden on road users and ensure safer, more reliable movement of people and goods.
